How Blackjack Works

A quick rules primer for new players and a refresher for regulars

THE OBJECTIVE

Beat the dealer by getting a hand value closer to 21 without going over. You're not competing against other players — only against the dealer. A "blackjack" (an ace + a 10-value card) on your first two cards pays 3:2.

CARD VALUES

Number cards (2–10) are worth their face value. Face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10 each. Aces are worth 1 or 11 — whichever helps your hand more. A "soft" hand contains an ace counted as 11.

HIT, STAND, DOUBLE, SPLIT

Hit: take another card. Stand: keep your current hand. Double Down: double your bet and take exactly one more card — best done on totals of 9, 10, or 11. Split: if you have a pair, split into two separate hands and play each independently.

DEALER RULES

The dealer follows fixed rules — no discretion allowed. Standard rules: dealer must hit on any total of 16 or less, and stand on 17 or more. Some variants use "soft 17" rules where the dealer must also hit a soft 17 (ace + 6). This slightly increases the house edge.

INSURANCE BET

When the dealer's upcard is an ace, you may take "insurance" — a side bet of up to half your main bet that pays 2:1 if the dealer has blackjack. Statistically, insurance is a poor bet for most players unless you're counting cards — which isn't possible in online play. Generally best to skip it.

Side Bets Explained

PERFECT PAIRS

Placed before the deal — you're betting that your first two cards will be a pair. Mixed pair (different suits, same value) pays around 5:1. Coloured pair (same colour, same value) pays around 10:1. Perfect pair (identical cards) can pay 25:1 or higher depending on the table variant.

21+3 (THREE CARD POKER SIDE BET)

Your two cards plus the dealer's upcard form a three-card poker hand. If that combination is a flush, straight, three-of-a-kind, straight flush, or suited triple, you win. Payouts range from 5:1 to 100:1 for a suited three-of-a-kind. High variance, high excitement.

BUST IT

You bet on the dealer busting (going over 21). If the dealer does bust, you're paid based on the number of cards it took them to go over. A 3-card bust pays lower than an 8-card bust. This side bet has a higher house edge than the main game but adds a layer of tension to every dealer draw.

LUCKY LUCKY

Based on your first two cards and the dealer's upcard forming totals of 19, 20, or 21. The more specific the combination — for example, a suited 777 — the higher the payout. Available on selected live tables at aiplay and adds fast-paced action without changing your main game strategy.

Side bets carry a higher house edge than the base game. They're designed for entertainment and occasional high-payout moments — not as a consistent strategy. Play them for fun and keep them proportional to your session bankroll.

Basic Strategy – The Mathematically Correct Play

Basic strategy reduces the house edge to roughly 0.5%. Here's a simplified reference for the most common hand decisions.

The table below covers hard totals (no ace, or ace counted as 1) against the dealer's upcard. Memorise the key decision points and you'll be playing near-optimal blackjack from your first session.

Your Hand 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 A
8 or less HHHHHHHHHH
9 HDDDDHHHHH
10 DDDDDDDDHH
11 DDDDDDDDDH
12 HHSSSHHHHH
13–16 SSSSSHHHHH
17+ SSSSSSSSSS
H = Hit S = Stand D = Double Down

This is a simplified reference chart. Full basic strategy also covers soft hands and pairs. Applies to standard 6-deck blackjack where dealer stands on soft 17.

Why Malaysians Love Playing Blackjack at aiplay

There's something distinctly satisfying about blackjack that sets it apart from most other casino games. Unlike slots, where the outcome is entirely outside your control, blackjack rewards study and decision-making. The choices you make at the table — hit or stand, double or split — actually affect your outcomes over time. For Malaysian players who like to feel engaged rather than passive, that's a big deal.

At aiplay, we've built our blackjack offering around what Malaysian players actually want. That means live dealer tables running around the clock — because let's be honest, the best time to play often comes at odd hours, whether it's after a late night at a mamak in Bangsar or winding down after watching live football. Our live dealers are professional, personable, and run tables at a pace that keeps the game moving without feeling rushed.

Deposits and withdrawals are another area where aiplay has made a real effort. You can fund your blackjack sessions via Touch n Go eWallet, Boost, GrabPay, or your Maybank and CIMB accounts. There are no strange currency conversion steps, no hidden processing delays for Malaysian players. The money goes in quickly and comes back out the same way.

For players looking to sharpen their game, the RNG (random number generator) blackjack tables at aiplay are ideal practice grounds. The pace is up to you, there's no social pressure from other players at the table, and you can reference basic strategy while you play without holding anyone up. Once you're comfortable with the fundamentals, the jump to live dealer tables feels natural.

aiplay's game integrity is backed by independent RNG testing and international licensing standards. The outcomes are genuinely random and verifiable. We don't manufacture "near miss" mechanics in blackjack — it's a pure card game with honest mathematics. The house edge on classic blackjack sits around 0.5% when basic strategy is applied correctly, making it one of the most player-favourable games available at any online casino in Malaysia.

21+ Age Restriction

All blackjack tables at aiplay — live dealer, RNG, speed, and VIP — are strictly available to players aged 21 years and above. This is a mandatory requirement under international gaming authority guidelines. Identity verification is performed at registration and may be requested again before any withdrawal. Underage gambling is prohibited.

Practical Blackjack Tips for New Players

Straightforward advice to get more out of every session at aiplay

Learn Basic Strategy First

Before playing with real money, spend time on the RNG tables learning the basic strategy chart. It's not complicated — most decisions become second nature after a few hours of practice. Proper strategy cuts the house edge significantly.

Set a Session Bankroll

Decide before you start how much you're willing to play with in one sitting — maybe RM 100 or RM 200 — and stick to it. Blackjack has natural variance even with perfect play. A defined bankroll keeps sessions enjoyable and budget-safe.

Avoid Insurance Bets

The insurance side bet sounds protective but it carries a house edge of around 6–7%. Unless you're an experienced card counter (not applicable in online blackjack), skipping insurance every single time is the mathematically correct play.

Always Split Aces and Eights

Splitting aces gives you two chances to hit blackjack or land a strong hand. Splitting eights avoids the weak 16-total problem. These two pairs are universal split situations in basic strategy — memorise them before your first real-money session.

Don't Chase Losses

A losing streak in blackjack is normal — even with perfect play. Doubling bets to chase losses (Martingale strategy) sounds logical but can lead to very large losses on a short bad run. Flat betting with proper strategy is a more sustainable approach.

Use Bonuses Wisely

Blackjack typically contributes only 10–20% toward bonus wagering requirements at aiplay. If you plan to clear a welcome bonus quickly, slots are more efficient. Reserve blackjack sessions for times when you're playing with your own funds and focused on enjoying the game itself.
